Portrait of Cleopatra by John William Waterhouse 1888.

Spoons, garlic clove, teacups, pages from my grandmother's recipe book all from my own photography collection.

Great title, great everything. Plus, I'm a big fan of Waterhouse.

"It's the universe that makes fun of us all."
"Why would the universe that makes fun of us all?"
"I dunno, maybe it's insecure."

Me too - love his Lady of Shalott series, but this one was appealing because she looked so grumpy!

Well, she didn't have the best taste in men.

My favorite Waterhouse is Ulysses and the Sirens.

Hmm... Maybe it's just me but I'm more attracted to the cups closest to us than Cleo, so our attention is somewhat mixed there.

I do like the tone and atmosphere of this piece though. :)

The cups also bothered me - too bright, and the colour values and design are a bit of a conflict with the rest. Thanks for the feedback confirming my unease.
