Well - start with a playing card. Then it's tape I bought from the hardware store used to repair corrugated metal roofs. I think it's called aluminum flashing in your part of the world. It has a shiny metal surface, with a sticky tarry black gunk backing. You burnish it down really well and then you doodle-engrave into the surface with a pencil, or - in this case - press metal charm shapes into it to leave an imprint. Then you rub acrylic paint (colours of your choice) over the surface and wipe most of it off. Et voila!

It's aluminum flashing tape. The assistants at my local hardware store always get a slightly hunted expression when they see me arriving because they know I'm going to ask for something odd to do even more odd things with!
