The story ~
The story of the peacock is associated with one of the many love affairs carried out by Zeus. Zeus developed a passion for a young maiden called Io, much to the displeasure of his wife Hera.

Hera caused Io to be turned into a white heifer and appointed the herdsman Argus to watch over the animal. Argus was known as the All-Seeing, because he had one hundred eyes distributed over his body.

Not one to easily be thwarted in his passion, Zeus sent his son Hermes to release Io from her captivity. Hermes disguised himself as a shepherd boy and - legend has it - conducted an endless boring conversation with Argus in between playing soothing music to him, until finally Argus' many eyes began to close, one by one. Hermes then cut off his head and released Io.

Hera reclaimed the hundred eyes and set them as ornaments into the tail of her favorite bird.
